“But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them;
or else you may even be found fighting against God.”— Acts 5:39

The authorities told them to stand down, to stop preaching in Jesus’ name. In a sharp rebuke Peter retorted, “I must obey God rather than men.” The reaction was explosive, to the point they wanted the apostles dead. I love this quote regarding the effects Holy Spirit’s conviction on different people…
To some, it brings repentance;
to others it brings indignation and rage.
The same sun which melts wax, also hardens clay.
— Chuck Smith
With hearts petrified like granite, they called out for blood. Not long ago, this same rage overtook the chants concerning Jesus, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Observing this growing angst, the well-known Gamaliel stood. His words full of divine wisdom pierced through the volatile crowd, “Avoid these guys, stay away from them. If this is a scheme from men, it will fizzle out. But, if it is from God like they claim, you won’t be able to stop it. In fact, you’ll find yourselves fighting directly against God Himself.”
Our obedience to the Holy Spirit is powerful, it’s magnetic, it’s inspirational yet offensive. It’s a tangible witness demonstrating the effective Gospel. Blinding as a light, yet lighting His narrow path. Attractive for the seeker, yet offensive for the mocker.
“For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one, an aroma from death to death; to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? For we are not like many, peddling the Word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.”
— 2 Corinthians 2:15-17
