How do you apply for your student loan?

First, you have to know what your financial aid options are.

Most colleges and universities have a variety of programs available that are geared toward student loan users. These options include:

Flexible Loan Plan

For students whose families qualify for financial aid, loans are only available through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. With the FFEL Program, you have to submit paperwork with the loan lender, and the lender makes the decisions. A student may apply for his or her loans through the Financial Aid Office at his or her local college or university.

If you’re not sure if you qualify, you can speak to your financial aid adviser at your college or university, or to a financial aid counselor at the Financial Aid Office at Florida State University.

6. How many people must participate in the program for it to be effective?

There are an unlimited number of people who can receive help, but each family receives only one payment. You may qualify even if you’ve never received any financial aid, as long as your family income is at or below 125 percent of the poverty level. If you are a student with no dependents, but you are eligible for Federal Stafford loans, you may be able to apply for assistance with student loan interest payments (under an income-driven repayment plan). The student loan forgiveness program does not require that you have a college degree. If you have no degree, you can use your income to pay off student loans. If you would like to go to school, see below for information on how to get free or reduced tuition. If you qualify, you can apply for a grant that will cover 50 percent of the cost of your tuition. You’ll need to have a combined income of at least $45,000.
